Ginger Nut Rangers

One of our neighbours came to see the girls as she had noticed the Omlet van last week and asked what breed our chickens were and having looked at our recent blog entries I noticed that we hadn't mention it. Posh and Pecks are Ginger Nut Rangers. We purchased them and the eglu from Omlet and they arrived on the 20th January aged approx 16 weeks.

The Ginger Nut Ranger is a Rhode Island Red crossed with a Light Sussex. Their feathers are a reddish ginger colour with some black tail feathers, although Pecks are more visible.

Chicken Eglu

Whilst chatting to an old friend I happened to mention that we had two chickens and an Eglu. Eglu? Don't you mean hen house! Yes and no I said. It's a hen house, but its called an Eglu and ours is green. I explained that it comes in many colours and that it's better than a wooden hen house because its easy to clean, double insulated and fox proof.

The eglu comes with an enclosed chicken run which is foxproof, which we didn't need as we had built a chicken run and got a refund for!

Afternoon Treat For Chickens

Today I replaced the raw brussel sprouts on a stem, since they has demolished the last one. It was on offer at asda for a pound Smile Demolished Brussel SproutsDemolished Brussel Sprouts

I also let them out of the chicken run and tried Posh and Pecks on some of Bill Oddies Mealworm Crumble mmmmmm the girls loved it....

Whilst they tucked into their afternoon treat, I removed the chicken poo from the run. I must admit the aubiose is excellent stuff, it helps absorb the poo making it easier to remove.

Chickens One Week Anniversary

I have just realised we have had the girls just over a week, how time flies Smile To be honest it feels like we have had Posh and Pecks ages.

I was a bit apprehensive about keeping chickens, but I am relaxed and confident that we made the right decision. Its thanks to the folks on the forums at http://www.omlet.co.uk

I spend approx an hour a day at the moment reading the forums. Well done omlet.

If anyone is considering keeping chickens then read the forums for advice or ask a question, they are a very friendly flock they dont peck Smile

30 Minute Chicken Workout

Since I hadn't spent much quality time with the girls, I decided to let them out of the chicken run for some supervised sit ups and push ups, both were eager to stretch their legs.

After their 30 minute workout they were both treated to some tinned sweetcorn, which had been bought for tonights tuna and paste bake.

Posh and Pecks appeared to have enjoyed their little workout, although I spent most of the time scraping up their little thank you parcels...yes it was poo Tongue

Roll on the summer

I generally like the winter months, but I dont get to see much of the girls, especially since I am currently on night shifts. Hurry up summer...

I am looking forward to letting the girls roam around in the summer evening whilst I'm sipping on a glass of wine, well isnt that what having chickens is all about Smile The good life!

Posh and Pecks seemed to have settled in well and seem to get excited when I appear at the door, although I think its probably the thought that I may have meal worms hidden on my person Tongue

Caecal shocker!

I must be the luckiest bloke on the planet. Wink Yet again, I was in the run clearing bits of poo (I'm starting to get a bit fixated!) and ran across a couple that worried me.

Apologies for the blurriness. caecalcaecal

The chicken poo was bright yellow and foamy so all sorts of things ran through my mind, especially as the hens are new and we are new to hen keeping! Disease, parasites, general unwellness, you know what I mean if you keep chickens too. It must be normal to be paranoid for their health, I hope anyway.

A day to spend with the girls

Today I was lucky enough to spend the whole day with the two terrors we now have. Quick! It's the feds, take coverQuick! It's the feds, take cover

Unluckily, that involved totally cleaning out the run but funnily enough I enjoyed it. Mainly because Posh and Pecks had to be let out of the run so I could give it a good mucking out!

So much poo

I cannot believe that Posh and Pecks between them could produce so much poo over 4 days, thankfully a majority of it is found in the poo tray from the eglu.

I am very glad that we have agreed to clean the chicken run weekly, I'd hate to think what it would be like after a fortnight...

Haven't seen much of the girls today as back at work, although was home in time to prepare them a treat before they put themselves to bed at 5pm

I had noticed that they have stopped using the cabbage as a football and have started to peck at it Smile

New Discovery

Posh and Pecks finally discovered the raw brussel sprouts on a stem that had been placed in the chicken run the afternoon they arrived.

With the odd peck here and there, they realised the could pull and flick the brussel sprout leaves around the run.

Brussel SproutsBrussel Sprouts

After about 10 minutes Posh decided to start eating the pieces she had flicked around followed by Pecks, mmmm
